A Legacy of Athleticism
Ebnoutalib’s story begins with a family steeped in sporting achievement. His father, Faissal, earned a silver medal for Germany in taekwondo at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. Younes himself credits a decade of training in the martial art with providing a crucial foundation for his football career. “My father took me to taekwondo training for 10 years and I think that has also helped me in football,” he stated on Tuesday. He further explained that the discipline fostered flexibility, contributing to a career remarkably free of muscular injuries.
Overcoming Early Setbacks
Despite his promising background, Ebnoutalib’s path wasn’t without obstacles. After developing through the ranks at Rot-Weiss Frankfurt, a challenging stint with Italian side AC Perugia from 2022 to 2023 threatened to derail his progress. The young player vividly remembers being “shouted off the training pitch” by a coach during his very first session with the senior team, a jarring experience as an 18-year-old in a foreign country.
He made only a single league appearance for Perugia in Serie C before departing in late 2023. Reflecting on the experience, he acknowledged, “In footballing terms it was the wrong decision for me [to go to Italy], but without that experience, I don’t think I would be where I am today.” This period of adversity appears to have instilled a resilience that would prove invaluable.
A Meteoric Rise
Returning to Germany, Ebnoutalib’s career found new momentum with a pivotal opportunity from coach Cimen at Giessen in July 2024. This move ignited his ascent, propelling him from the fourth tier of German football to the top flight within a single year. A subsequent transfer to Elversberg in January 2025 saw him narrowly miss out on Bundesliga promotion last May, but he quickly found his form in the autumn months.
Now, with Eintracht Frankfurt, Ebnoutalib is on the cusp of realizing his ambitions, including potential participation in Champions League football. “To make a jump like that in the space of a year and suddenly be playing against world-class players is pretty crazy,” he admitted.
Facing Opportunity Amidst Injury Concerns
Ebnoutalib may be thrust into a crucial role on Friday, with Frankfurt currently navigating a shortage of attacking options. First-choice striker Jonathan Burkardt is sidelined with a calf injury, and French forward Elye Wahi has been loaned to Nice. This situation presents a significant opportunity for the young striker to make an immediate impact.
Former coach Cimen is confident in Ebnoutalib’s readiness for the challenge. “With his abilities, we always knew he would end up in the top divisions,” Cimen stated. He even predicted a future move to the Premier League, noting, “The Premier League is a physically very tough league, and Younes has all the right qualities for that.” For now, however, Ebnoutalib remains focused on living his dream with Eintracht Frankfurt.
