“Exotic” experiences in football are not for everyone. Even when you are, like James Rodriguez, who has experienced nine clubs and as many different countries in his rich career, a true globetrotter.

In an interview broadcast this Sunday on Mexican television, for the media Globe Sports, the Colombian international (96 caps, 27 goals) recounted with a touch of bitterness his experience in Qatar, in the Al-Rayyan club. He did a short freelance stint there after his time at Everton, during the 2021-22 season, and obviously had a lot of trouble adapting there, for strange reasons.

” I was scared “

“Life and culture in Qatar are very difficult, it was a country where it was difficult to adapt,” he says. We know that in football, everyone is naked in the shower, but my teammates told me: You can’t do it like that. I was scared. »

Another problem: tableware, visibly very different in the emirate. “There, everyone eats with their hands,” he explains again. It was difficult for me. They wanted to share their meal with me and I said: No, thank you. I asked for cutlery and they told me: No, with your hand and I replied: You’re crazy, I’m not going to eat with my hand. »

The former AS Monaco, Real Madrid and Everton player ultimately did not stay very long in the Qatar championship, where he only played 16 matches in total. After a short stint in Greece, at Olympiakos, which ended abruptly before the end of his contract, since this summer he has been enjoying happier days in Brazil, in Sao Paulo, where he rubs shoulders with the former player of PSG Lucas Moura and the future, Lucas Beraldo.
