Youth Housing Aid: $50M Commitment | [Board/Organization Name]

Castilla y León Invests Heavily in Youth Housing and Opportunities with New Hostel Campaign

The government of Castilla y León is doubling down on its commitment to young people, launching a new initiative offering free stays at a renovated hostel and expanding access to affordable housing options. This comes as the region continues to see positive results from its rental aid programs, with over 6,280 young people benefiting from financial assistance in 2024.

Addressing the Housing Challenge for Young Residents

Policies aimed at improving housing access for young people are a key priority for the regional government, which is committed to supporting the 417,000 young residents of Castilla y León. According to a senior official, these efforts are “yielding important results,” with 6,280 individuals under the age of 36 among the 21,006 total beneficiaries of rental aid granted by the regional Executive.

The government’s commitment extends beyond rental assistance. More than 3,000 homes are currently under construction or renovation, slated to become available to young people at discounted rates for both purchase and rental through the ‘Tuya’ young housing plan.

‘Sanabria, a Hostel, a Thousand Stories’ Campaign Launched

During the closing of the 10th Castilla y León Youth Awards gala, Isabel Blanco, Vice President and Counselor for Family and Equal Opportunities, announced the launch of the ‘Sanabria, a hostel, a thousand stories’ campaign. This initiative will offer young people free, half-board accommodation at the newly renovated San Martín de Castañeda hostel, located in the picturesque Lago de Sanabria Natural Park in Zamora.

The hostel underwent a comprehensive €1.9 million renovation, funded by European funds, and is now ready to welcome guests. Reservations, made via email at smartincastaneda-ij@jcyl.es, will be accepted in strict order of registration for stays between December 26 and February 22, 2026. Specific availability periods include December 26-30, January 2-11, and weekly stays from Thursday to Sunday beginning January 15 through February 22.

Expanding Youth Facilities Across the Region

The investment in the San Martín de Castañeda hostel is part of a broader effort to enhance the network of youth facilities across Castilla y León. The Department of Family and Equal Opportunities has invested significantly in a network comprising eight residences, eleven hostels, nine camps, three youth houses, a risk prevention center, and an exhibition hall.

Beyond San Martín de Castañeda, the Board has allocated €1.2 million to remodel and improve energy efficiency at the Arbejal youth hostel in Cervera de Pisuerga, and €575,000 to modernize the Fernán González hostel in Miranda de Ebro. Further renovations have also been undertaken at youth facilities in Burgos, León, Zamora, Segovia, and Palencia.

Supporting Youth Associations and Participation

Recognizing the importance of youth-led initiatives, the Board actively supports youth associations throughout the region. Approximately 1,500 youth associations in Castilla y León have free access to the Ministry of Family and Equal Opportunities’ hostels for their activities.

The Board also provides substantial financial support to the Youth Council of Castilla y León, contributing €660,000 annually for its operations, including the Youth Guarantee informant network and volunteer programs. Regional youth associations receive an additional €160,000 in subsidies.

Isabel Blanco expressed her satisfaction in recognizing both the individuals dedicated to improving the lives of young people and the youth of Castilla y León themselves, praising their commitment to society. The recent awards gala celebrated the contributions of individuals like Mayte Gómez, Luis Manuel González, and Víctor Pérez, alongside exemplary youth councils from other regions of Spain.

These investments and initiatives underscore the government’s dedication to creating a supportive environment where young people can thrive and build their futures within the community.
