The 2026 Youth Olympic Games, set to be the first held on the African continent, will feature a dynamic and locally-responsive sports program, signaling a new era for the event. The International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) evolving approach to the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) sports program prioritizes adaptability to local contexts. This commitment is evident in the selection of 25 sports for Dakar 2026, encompassing both traditional and emerging disciplines.
Core Sports for Dakar 2026
the confirmed sports lineup for the games includes a broad spectrum of athletic pursuits: athletics, swimming, archery, badminton, baseball (specifically Baseball5), basketball (3×3), boxing, breaking, road cycling, show jumping, fencing, football (futsal), handball (beach), judo, karate, modern pentathlon, rugby sevens, sailing, skateboarding, sport climbing, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, and wushu.
Along with these core sports, the games will feature 10 demonstration sports, providing opportunities for exposure and potential inclusion in future YOG editions. These include canoeing, golf, hockey, karate, modern pentathlon, shooting, sport climbing, surfing, tennis, and weightlifting.
The inclusion of demonstration sports allows the IOC to test new formats and gauge interest in emerging disciplines.
A Tri-City Games: Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly
The 2026 Youth olympic Games will be uniquely hosted across three Senegalese cities: Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly. this decentralized approach is intentional, with organizers hoping to leverage the games to drive positive change throughout the country and establish a new model for future YOG hosts.
Dakar, the capital city, will serve as a central hub, hosting events at three key venues. The Egg Tower will be the site for 3×3 basketball, Baseball5, breaking, skateboarding, and swimming competitions.The Ste Heart venue will host athletics, boxing, futsal, and rugby sevens. Corniche West will be dedicated to the 10 demonstration sports and serve as the start and finish line for road cycling races.
Diamniadio: A New Sporting Center
Located approximately 30 kilometers east of Dakar, Diamniadio is rapidly developing as a new sporting center. The city will boast four competition venues: the Equestrian center (show jumping), the Dakar Arena (badminton and futsal), the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium (archery), and the Dakar Expo Center (artistic gymnastics, fencing, judo, table tennis, taekwondo, and wushu).
Notably, Diamniadio will also house the Youth Olympic Village, providing accomodation for athletes during the games.
Saly: Coastal Competition
Approximately 80 kilometers south of Dakar, Saly will focus on coastal sports at the Saly Beach west venue. This location will host competitions in beach handball, beach volleyball, beach wrestling, coastal rowing, sailing, and triathlon.
The decision to distribute events across these three locations underscores the ambition to showcase Senegal’s diverse landscapes and foster a nationwide celebration of sport. The games represent a significant prospect for Senegal and a bold step forward for the Youth Olympic Games movement.
