England opening batter Zak Crawley has committed to Kent for another year, ensuring he remains with the club through next summer, just 72 hours after missing out on an updated central contract unveiled by the England and Wales Cricket Board.
The 28-year-old opener returns to Kent as his primary employer following six years on the central contract list maintained by the England and Wales Cricket Board. Having previously enjoyed a lengthy tenure opening the batting, Crawley was left off the 2026-27 national deal roster after being omitted from the Test lineup at the beginning of the home summer. The ECB released an updated list of 30 centrally contracted players, making him one of only two cricketers—alongside Lancashire’s Luke Wood—to lose their national agreements on performance grounds.
County Career and Promotion Back to Division One
Since his 2017 debut, Crawley has featured in upwards of 180 matches across all formats for his local side. Over that span, he has accumulated more than 7,400 runs across formats, registered 10 centuries, and earned Kent Men’s Cap number 219 in 2019. His resume with the club includes a T20 Blast title in 2021 alongside two County Championship promotion campaigns in 2018 and 2026.

During the 2026 domestic campaign, Crawley appeared in 12 County Championship matches as Kent secured promotion back to Division One, contributing 608 runs with a top score of 89 and four half-centuries. His international absences include a hiatus from Test cricket following the conclusion of the previous winter’s Ashes series in Sydney, as well as an ODI appearance in Sri Lanka back in January.
Locker Room Leadership and the Road to 2027
Kent Director of Cricket Simon Cook welcomed the extension, emphasizing the value of Crawley’s experience in shaping the club’s younger talent heading into the 2027 season in the top division.
His experience of playing around the world not only benefits us on the field, but he is always willing to pass on his knowledge to our younger batters, something that will benefit us in the long term. His multi-format ability means that he is an integral part of our squad going into 2027.
Simon Cook, Director of Cricket at Kent
Crawley expressed enthusiasm about returning to the county setup as Kent prepares to compete in the top tier of the County Championship next summer.
It’s an exciting time as we head back into Division One of the County Championship and I’m looking forward to the challenge of competing for Kent this coming summer. It’s great to see so many young players coming through the system here, similar to my journey into first-team cricket, and I’m excited to help them settle into the first team and further their development for the long term.
