A 15-year-old boy is recovering from severe burns after being intentionally set ablaze in Anderlecht,Belgium,in what authorities believe stemmed from a dispute between rival groups. The shocking incident has led to the detention of three minors, raising questions about escalating youth violence and the factors driving it.
The teenager, identified as Zakaria, recounted the harrowing ordeal, describing the intense pain he experienced instantly after the attack. “I hurt everywhere: my face, my legs and my buttocks. But I’m still alive. Since yesterday, I’ve been awake… Everything hurts me,” he stated, according to reports.
The Attack and Immediate Aftermath
According to the ongoing investigation, Zakaria was ambushed from behind and doused with gasoline. “When I turned around, some of it also landed in my face. The next moment, everything was in flames,” he detailed. Demonstrating remarkable composure, Zakaria instinctively plunged into a nearby canal in an attempt to extinguish the fire.Unable to swim, he was rescued by friends who where present at the scene and later received emergency medical attention.
The incident occurred amidst indications of a conflict between two gangs, though Zakaria admitted to having only a fragmented recollection of the events leading up to the attack. “I know there was an argument… But I don’t know what about anymore,” he confessed.
Medical Condition and Recovery
zakaria is currently hospitalized and facing a lengthy recovery process. He sustained third-degree burns across his body and anticipates an extended stay in the hospital. “I can’t walk yet and I have to stay in the hospital for at least another month,” he indicated. The long-term physical and emotional consequences of the attack remain uncertain.
A Surprising Lack of Anger
Perhaps most striking is Zakaria’s reported lack of animosity towards his attackers. “Angry at them? Not really… I just don’t understand,” he explained, a sentiment that has surprised many observers. His father, speaking from his son’s bedside, echoed this bewilderment, questioning, “How does someone end up dousing another person with gasoline and setting them on fire?”
Investigation and Detentions
Belgian authorities are actively investigating the incident, and three minors – aged 14, 16, and another who presented himself to police in Hal-Vilvoorde on Monday – have been placed in public youth protection institutions (IPPJ). This placement signifies a preventative measure aimed at safeguarding both the public and the individuals involved, while the investigation proceeds.
The case underscores the complex challenges facing communities grappling with youth violence and the need for extensive interventions to address the root causes of such incidents. The investigation continues, and further details are expected to emerge as authorities piece together the events that led to this shocking act of violence.
