As we have already informed, the Armenian shooting team is participating in the European Youth Championship in Moscow these days, in which tickets to the Youth Olympic Games are raffled off. Hrachik Babayan secured the first ticket yesterday, but it is not the only success of our team.
Today, Zaven Igityan took the 5th place in the final eight with 571 points in the 10m, 60-shot pistol exercise. It should be noted that a total of 43 athletes participated in the exercise. Athletes who took the 1st-6th places could get an Olympic ticket.
8 athletes representing 5 countries took part in the final, and each country could claim only one ticket. It means that, regardless of the result of the final, the Armenian shooter already won one of the raffle tickets.
Zaven Igityan, however, was not satisfied with a mere ticket and continued the struggle. As a result, he was declared undefeated in the finals and won the title of champion of the European Youth Championship, scoring 200.0 points. Pavlo Korostylov (Ukraine, 198.4 points) is in second place, Alexander Todorov (Bulgaria, 177.6) is in third place.
Thus, Hrachik Babayan and Zaven Igityan will represent the Republic of Armenia at the Youth Olympic Games to be held in Nanjing in August.
Seyran Nikoghosyan is the head coach of the Armenian shooting team. Zaven Igityan is a student of the Zinaida and Yuri Simonyan Shooting Sports School and the Republican Shooting Sports School of the RA Ministry of Education and Science. His personal trainer is his father, Khoren Igityan, whom Aysor.am reporter asked to share his impressions.
– First of all, I should say that representatives of a large number of countries participated – noted Khoren Igityan. – States that do not have any obstacles in the preparation of athletes and are able to create extraordinary conditions. Zaven’s victory is doubly valuable from this point of view.
Imagine if Europe was given a total of 24 seats. If we keep in mind that 4 exercises are included in the competition, it will be understood that 6 athletes from each exercise could get a ticket to the Olympics. In the general competition, Zaven already qualified, and then developed his success in the final, taking the first place among 8 participants and being declared the European Junior Champion. Zaven’s scores are also respectable for the senior championship and I hope that my son will continue to improve and achieve even greater success in the future. This is a moment of joy and pride for me, but we would never have experienced it without the serious sponsorship we received.
I am retired, my wife does not work. It turns out that we could not provide suitable training conditions on our own. At first, Vardan Balayan bought weapons and ammunition, provided a base for training. Then the “CRONIMET” company took over that job, providing all the development opportunities and also paying the tuition fee. I highly appreciate the work done by “Chronimet” and I hope that under its sponsorship, Zaven will once again record excellent results in the upcoming tournaments – the World Cup, the World Championship and the Youth Olympic Games.
