The President of Ukraine met with US President Joe Biden in the US capital, they held a joint press conference.
Vladimir Zelensky again rejected the idea of peace with Russia at the cost of ceding the territories it had seized, the BBC reports.
“How can Ukraine give up its territories? This is just nonsense and stupidity. The point is that there are our Ukrainians, our children, families, an integral part of our society. There, our people become victims of torture, rape, and are killed,” Zelensky said at a joint press conference.
He said it was “hard for him to understand which political players and forces have the idea to suggest that Ukraine give up its territories and people, their stories and memories.”
The assumption that Ukraine will eventually have to agree with the loss of part of its territories and enter into peace negotiations from this position is discussed mainly by the press and political observers.
Official Kyiv invariably rejects this idea, and politicians from allied countries, when asked the corresponding question, usually answer that the decision in any case will be up to Ukraine, and they are not pushing it towards anything like that.
Joe Biden emphasized that the people of Ukraine challenged Putin, and the head of Russia failed.”
“We will not turn our backs on your country and your people. Most people in Congress and in the country itself, like me, understand that the success of Ukraine is vital to the security of the whole world,” the US President said.
Regarding the debate in Congress over appropriations for aid to Ukraine (as well as Israel and Taiwan, as well as to strengthen the border with Mexico), Biden said that democracy is the art of compromise, but he has already offered a compromise to Republican lawmakers.
Vladimir Zelensky especially emphasized that to win the war, Ukraine needs to control the air. It especially noted the American Patriot air defense system, which Russia, according to it, cannot oppose anything.
“We want to win the war in the air, to end Russian dominance in the skies, because whoever controls the skies dictates the duration of the war,” he stressed.
“Thanks to the fact that Ukraine is on the defensive, other European nations are not threatened by Russian aggression,” the Ukrainian president said. “We have proven that our courage and our partnership are stronger than any hostile Russian actions.”
