KYIV. March 31. UNN. On the anniversary of the liberation of Bucha from the Russian occupiers, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took part in the raising of the National Flag of Ukraine on the restored flagpole of the Memorial to the Defenders of the Bucha Urban Territorial Community, presented the city with an honorary medal – Hero of Ukraine and state awards, reports UNN.

The flagpole is located on the square at the intersection of the road from Buchi to the village of Vorzel. On March 3, 2022, a major battle took place at this location: units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and volunteers stopped a column of Russian armored vehicles moving from the direction of Borodyanka and Vorzel. Armed with light weapons, the volunteers held a circular defense against the numerically superior Russian forces for almost a day.

Previously, this square housed the largest flag of Ukraine in the region, which was destroyed by the enemy during the occupation. Now this flag has been restored and solemnly raised in the presence of the President and distinguished guests.

The event was attended by: President of the Republic of Moldova Maya Sandu, Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic Eduard Heger, Prime Minister of Slovenia Robert Golob, Prime Minister of Croatia Andrej Plenković, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk, Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal, head of the Office of the President Andriy Yermak.

In the presence of high-ranking foreign guests, the Head of State presented the honorary award “City – Hero of Ukraine” to the mayor of Buchi, Anatoly Fedoruk.

“Today it is an honor for me to present Buchi – the city of heroes – with an honorary award that symbolizes the strength of this city, symbolizes the difficult path traveled by Ukrainians,” said Volodymyr Zelenskyi.

The President also presented the servicemen with state awards.

The Head of State and foreign guests also visited Vokzalna Street in Buch. On February 27, 2022, the Armed Forces of Ukraine stopped and destroyed a column of Russian troops moving towards Kyiv from Gostomel on this street. During the hostilities, 215 buildings were damaged, that is, every third house on the street. The President, together with foreign leaders, got acquainted with the progress of restoration of damaged residential buildings.

Volodymyr Zelenskyi also talked with the resident of one of the houses – 85-year-old Hryhoriy Zamohylin, who stayed in his house during the hostilities and occupation of Buchi.
