He told world leaders that Vladimir Putin is the only obstacle to resolving what he called a never-ending war, urging nations to target Moscow’s financial lifelines.

On Wednesday, just hours prior to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressing the UN general assembly alongside global leaders, daylight drone strikes launched by Russia battered Kyiv. Two people were killed and 41 wounded in Ukraine’s capital. Following the latest wave of continuous daily Russian raids that plague Ukrainian civilians, heavy plumes of black smoke drifted across the city. The drones set off fires and damaged buildings in Kyiv and elsewhere in Ukraine overnight, authorities said. Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that the hostilities persisted into the early hours of Thursday, requiring emergency response teams to be deployed across three distinct districts.

Earlier Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov clashed with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha. Russia gets its turn Saturday to address the assembly. President Vladimir Putin hasn’t traveled to the gathering in years, sending Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov instead. Speaking before the U.N. Security Council on Wednesday, Lavrov stated that Moscow is ready to pursue discussions toward an enduring peace, though it rejects any mere temporary cessation of hostilities. He maintained that such a lull would exclusively serve to grant Ukraine and its allies an opportunity to procure additional weaponry.
The conflict has sent shockwaves across the globe. Commencing its invasion of Ukraine upward of 4½ years ago, Moscow maintains that the offensive aims to safeguard its national security alongside the welfare of Russian nationals and Russian speakers residing in select Ukrainian territories. Western intelligence estimates indicate that Russian fatalities have surpassed 500,000, while total Ukrainian military casualties have similarly exceeded 500,000, inclusive of up to 140,000 deaths.
