Lithuania’s capital city, Vilnius, has unveiled a new, fully electric ferryboat, the Lašiša, too navigate the River Neris, marking a notable step toward its goal of becoming the European Green Capital in 2025. The launch, which occurred on July 25th, demonstrates the city’s commitment to sustainable transportation solutions and reducing its environmental impact.
A Growing Trend in European Urban Waterways
The Lašiša joins a burgeoning trend of electric ferries across Europe, with similar initiatives already underway on waterways like the Elbe and in Copenhagen harbor. This shift towards electric propulsion reflects a broader commitment to cleaner air and quieter urban environments. The new ferry offers a convenient and eco-friendly alternative for commuters and tourists alike, connecting business and residential districts while providing access to key cultural and historic landmarks.
Affordable and accessible River Transit
Passengers can purchase tickets for the Lašiša online or via a dedicated mobile request for just €3,or €4 directly on board. The vessel has a capacity of 32 people and is equipped with free Wi-Fi, enhancing the passenger experience. According to reports, residents are already embracing the new service.
“If you live in the center, in this area, and you work here, I guess, yes (electric boats would be a good thing),” said one Vilnius resident. “Especially, maybe a woman would like it, like a romantic way to go to work, or to clear your mind after work. I think it will be very cool.”
A Tight Deadline Met Through Collaboration
The project to introduce the zero-emission ferry was completed under a demanding timeline. “So we are very thankful for the boat company that built the boats,” stated Loreta Levulytė-Staškevičienė,CEO of JUDU,Vilnius’s public transport and mobility services company. “And it obviously was a big responsibility for the city and for the citizens to say that we would have made a boat in six or seven months.”
Innovative Design for Energy efficiency
The Lašiša is designed for optimal energy efficiency. Rather than planing on top of the water, the ferry cuts through the water, reducing energy consumption. Furthermore, approximately 80% of the boat’s surface is covered in solar panels, contributing to its sustainable operation.
Speed and Future Expansion
The ferry’s top speed is 7.5 kilometers per hour, though it may operate at around 5 kilometers per hour in certain areas to minimize wake. This speed was a point of discussion between JUDU and the previous transportation minister, who questioned whether the performance was being accurately represented. However, the Vilnius transport department maintains that the Lašiša’s speed is comparable to, or exceeds, that of similar vessels in other European cities.
The city is already planning to expand the ferry network, with two additional electric ferries expected to join the Lašiša in the near future. This expansion will increase the frequency of service and extend the ferry route, further enhancing the city’s sustainable transportation options.
