A new short film documenting the Zero2Hero freediving competition will debut on YouTube at 11 a.m. on Sunday, November 23, showcasing the journey of aspiring freedivers. The competition, which concluded in March at the GO Diving Show, aimed to transform novice divers into confident and skilled practitioners of the sport.
From Newbie to Freediver: The Zero2Hero Challenge
The Zero2Hero competition was designed specifically for individuals new to freediving, offering intensive training and a unique competitive experience. Sponsored by British tour operator Oonasdivers, the grand prize was a fully-funded trip to the renowned Marsa Shagra Eco Village in southern Egypt – a coveted reward for pushing personal limits.
Twelve candidates were initially selected to participate in a rigorous training program led by Marcus Greatwood, founder of the NoTanx Freediving Club and coach to multiple world record-holders, and his team in London. The program emphasized not just physical technique, but also the crucial mental aspects of the sport.
Participants were guided through exercises focused on building awareness and relaxation, and engaged in games and challenges designed to test their adaptability. According to a company release, the assessment process prioritized personal growth and the ability to respond effectively under pressure.
Final Showdown at the GO Diving Show
The competition progressed to a second stage, where five finalists competed in static apnea sessions – breath-holding exercises – within the indoor pool at the GO Diving Show. Further coaching sessions were held on Saturday, building anticipation for the final showdown on Sunday.
Ultimately, Saorla emerged as the winner, not solely based on breath-hold duration, but on a holistic evaluation of her performance. A senior official stated that the judges considered self-awareness, safety, relaxation, and enjoyment – reflecting the core values of the NoTanx club.
Future of Zero2Hero
NoTanx Freediving Club is already planning a return of the Zero2Hero competition in 2026, signaling a commitment to fostering the next generation of freedivers. Interested individuals are encouraged to follow NoTanx for updates and future opportunities.
