Malaysian Duo to Compete for Gold at World Junior Championships
Malaysia’s hopes at the World Junior Championships in Guwahati, India, rest on the shoulders of girls’ doubles pair Low Zi Yu and Noraqilah Maisarah Ramdan, who will compete for the gold medal on Sunday, October 19. The pair secured their place in the final after a hard-fought victory over China’s Cao Zihan and Chen Fan Shutian.
The semi-final match, lasting 46 minutes, saw Zi Yu and Noraqilah emerge victorious with a score of 15-13, 12-15, 15-7. This win provides a crucial opportunity for Malaysia to salvage a positive outcome from the championships.
For Noraqilah, the final represents a chance at redemption following a disappointing result in the mixed doubles event. She and partner Loh Zi Heng were defeated by Taiwan’s Hung Bing-fu and Chou Yun-an 15-13, 12-15, 8-15, despite having beaten the same Taiwanese duo twice the previous week at the world junior mixed team championships. The loss came as a surprise, given their seeding as top contenders.
Zi Yu also has personal motivation heading into the final. She aims to overcome the heartbreak of finishing as runner-up last year with Dania Sofea Zaidi. “I’ve played against Fan Shu three times before, so I was able to read her game better today,” Zi Yu stated. “I tried to stay more focused and we eventually won. In the final, I will try to be tactical against the Chinese pair. I lost in the final last year, so this time I’ll give my very best to win the gold medal for my country.”
