Amazon’s autonomous vehicle subsidiary, Zoox, is significantly expanding its robotaxi service, marking what the company calls its “biggest milestone to date.” The expansion will bring fully autonomous ride-hailing to more areas of San Francisco and Las Vegas, and initiate testing phases in Austin, and Miami. This move signals a major step toward wider accessibility for the technology and a broader test of its viability in diverse urban environments.
Zoox, acquired by Amazon in 2020, aims to revolutionize urban transportation with its purpose-built, fully autonomous vehicles. CEO Aicha Evans stated, “This year is all about growth. We are actively implementing the insights gained to scale our robotaxi service safely and reliably across the country and offer even more passengers our unique experience,” according to a company statement. Zoox asserts it is currently the only company operating a fully autonomous ride-hailing service with a vehicle specifically designed for that purpose.
Expanding Service in Existing Markets
San Francisco will notice a substantial increase in Zoox’s presence. Having launched a limited service last year, the company plans to quadruple its operational scope in the spring, adding densely populated neighborhoods like Marina, North Beach, Chinatown, and Pacific Heights. This expansion builds on initial testing and data collection, allowing Zoox to refine its technology in a complex urban setting.
In Las Vegas, Zoox is also significantly growing its footprint. The number of locations where the robotaxi service is available has more than doubled, now including the Las Vegas Convention Center and many major hotels along the Strip. Zoox has also established partnerships with Sphere and T-Mobile Arena to offer limited service during high-traffic events. The company began offering its autonomous taxi service in Las Vegas last fall, and the expansion reflects positive initial reception and operational learnings.
New Testing Grounds: Austin and Miami
Austin and Miami represent the next phase of Zoox’s rollout strategy. The company has been conducting testing with a retrofitted fleet in both cities since mid-2024 and is now moving to deploy its purpose-built autonomous vehicles on public roads. Initially, rides will be limited to Zoox employees, their families, and friends, allowing for controlled data collection and refinement before a broader public launch. The gradual expansion will enable Zoox to assess the vehicles’ performance in different climates and traffic patterns.
Progress and Future Outlook
To date, Zoox vehicles have accumulated nearly two million autonomous miles and have transported over 350,000 passengers. The company reports a waiting list exceeding 500,000 people, indicating significant public interest in the technology. Zoox currently operates test fleets in ten U.S. Markets, including recently added Dallas and Phoenix, alongside San Francisco, Las Vegas, Austin, Miami, Seattle, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Washington, D.C.
The expansion underscores the growing investment in autonomous vehicle technology and the potential for robotaxis to reshape urban transportation. Even as challenges remain – including regulatory hurdles, public perception, and ensuring safety in all conditions – Zoox’s progress demonstrates the increasing feasibility of driverless ride-hailing services. The company is continually working to improve its technology, focusing on reducing wait times and enhancing the overall passenger experience.
Zoox’s next steps will involve analyzing data collected from the expanded operations in San Francisco and Las Vegas, as well as the initial testing phases in Austin and Miami. The company has not yet announced a firm timeline for broader public access in these new markets, but will likely share updates on its progress throughout the year.
