Gallup Korea announced on the 26th that the approval rating for President Yoon Seok-yeol was 24%. Even after the Jeonju survey conducted after the April 10 general elections showed the lowest since taking office (23%), it failed to make a clear rebound and continued to move sideways.

According to a survey conducted by Gallup Korea on 1,001 adults nationwide from the 23rd to the 25th, 24% responded that President Yoon is performing his duties well, while 65% responded that he is performing poorly.

Gallup Korea explained, “Changes in job evaluation figures are movements within the margin of error that make it difficult to give meaning, and the 1 percentage point change in the job positivity rate is due to rounding to the decimal point.” This means that there is no difference from last week, when President Yoon’s approval rating for state administration was at an all-time low (23%) (see the National Election Opinion Survey Deliberation Committee website for details).

The negative evaluation of President Yoon is 65%, down 3 percentage points from the previous week. The reasons for negative responses were ‘economy, people’s livelihood, and prices’ (21%), followed by ‘insufficient communication’ (15%). Even in Daegu and Gyeongbuk (TK), a conservative stronghold, the positive evaluation was 25%, down 10 percentage points from the previous week. One opinion poll expert said, “The attempt to appoint people from the Moon Jae-in administration, such as former Minister of SMEs and Startups Park Young-sun and former Director of the Korea Institute for Democracy Yang Jeong-cheol, appears to have increased the negative evaluation factor among conservatives.”

An official from the ruling party assessed, “President Yoon selected the new Chief of Staff Jeong Jin-seok and pushed for a meeting with Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, but it did not lead to an opportunity for a rebound.” It is analyzed that the supporters who were disappointed by the slow reform of the government, the ruling party’s lack of innovative measures, and the continued conflict between President Yoon and the People Power Party’s former Emergency Response Committee Chairman Han Dong-hoon are not returning even after the crushing defeat in the general election.
