800km, revolutionary journey…from Havana to Santiago de Cuba

The journey starts from Havana (La Habana), the capital of Cuba. The gateway to traveling to Havana, my first impression of Cuba in front of the Old National Assembly Building was Salsa! Salsa is Cuba’s daily life and the national dance danced by everyone from grandfathers to children! Cuban people said they had a hard time not being able to communicate or dance together during the coronavirus pandemic. Fortunately, the streets of Cuba are gradually coming back to life.

A lively traditional market in Havana. At the market, you can see the real life in Cuba. What stands out is the bundle of money that appears every time you pay for an item. This is the result of skyrocketing prices due to currency reform and the economic blockade of the United States. The line of cars lining up at gas stations to fill up today’s gas shows the Cuban people today.

A long journey from Havana to Santiago de Cuba. A long journey of 800 km and 15 hours! After my car broke down on a rough mountain road, I decided to take a break in a small mountain village. In commemoration of International Women’s Day on March 8, I received flowers as a gift and was treated to coffee brewed in the traditional Cuban way, feeling the warm affection of the Cuban people. Cuba’s Arirang Guantanamera and exciting dances also add to the laughter.

Santiago de Cuba arrived after driving 800 km. Follow the journey of the revolution here, the hometown of Cuban hero Fidel Castro and the center of the Cuban revolution. Meet the sleeping revolutionary heroes at the Santa Ifigenia Cemetery and head to the Sierra Maestra, the cradle of the revolution. The rugged Sierra Maestra, 1,974 meters above sea level, is a historical place where the revolutionary army prepared for two years of guerrilla struggle! At the Revolutionary Army Headquarters, we encounter traces of Che Guevara and Fidel Castro, and reflect on the meaning of the Cuban Revolution at this small school with only two students at the top of the mountain.

EBS1’s ‘World Theme Travel’, a travel program that delivers real-life experiences, is broadcast every Monday to Thursday at 8:40 PM.
