The Afrihealth Optonet Association (AHOA), which includes 2,300 NGOs from 106 countries specializing in health, environment and climate change issues, issued a statement of support to Azerbaijan regarding COP29.

Day.Az reports that the statement was signed by the head of AHOA, Uzodinma Adiriece. 107 NGOs from 30 countries that are members and partners of AHOA also joined the appeal.

In the statement, AHOA welcomes Azerbaijan’s genuine dedication and leadership in global action on climate change, and calls on the entire world to use the historic opportunity created by COP29 to fight climate change.

We present the statement:

“As the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) to be held in Azerbaijan is approaching, the leadership, members and partners of the Afrihealth Optonet Association (AHOA) want to guide the global community towards a sustainable and healthy future. We express our heartfelt support to the president of COP29 and the host country, Azerbaijan, who has undertaken an important task.

Deeply concerned about the environmental challenges facing our planet, AHOA welcomes the genuine dedication and leadership demonstrated by Azerbaijan’s COP29 leadership in global action on climate change. Fighting climate change is a very responsible job. We are at a critical juncture where bold and decisive action is required to mitigate the effects of climate change, protect vulnerable communities/population groups, and preserve ecosystems for future generations. In this regard, AHOA is pleased to note that the commitment of the President of COP29 and Azerbaijan in promoting dialogue, cooperation and innovation is of great importance.

We believe that Azerbaijan, with its rich cultural heritage and diverse natural landscapes, is not only a custodian of invaluable ecological resources, but also an active advocate for climate change and environmental protection. Through initiatives such as “Trinity-Mission 1.5”, Azerbaijan demonstrated its unwavering commitment to sustainable development in the field of climate resilience and ensured the sustainability of the achievements made at COP28. AHOA believes that Azerbaijan will achieve strong consensual results in climate change negotiations during COP29.

Members of civil society play an important role in climate change action, acting as catalysts for change and driving climate movements. From local community-led climate adaptation projects to youth advocacy campaigns, civil society organizations play an important role in raising awareness, mobilizing resources and driving change at all levels. As a global network and think tank, AHOA is confident in the COP29 President’s and Azerbaijan’s ability to facilitate important global cooperation, make ambitious commitments, and chart a course toward a more sustainable and just future for all.

We stand with the COP29 President, Azerbaijan and civil society organizations around the world in their efforts to accelerate climate action and build a brighter tomorrow for our planet. Let’s seize this historic opportunity to fight climate change together and create a world where both people and nature flourish.”
