The Red Panthers (FIH 4) started their Olympic qualifying tournament in Valencia, Spain with a 0-0 draw against Ireland (FIH 13). The Belgian hockey women dominated the game but failed to find their way to the net, despite eleven penalty corners.
Red Panthers dominated Ireland for ninety minutes, but failed to score. The eleven missed penalty corners in particular were painful for Belgium. The Irish goalkeeper crowned herself the star.
“We are a bit disappointed,” Charlotte Englebert responded on ‘RTL Sports’. “At the same time, we are generally playing a good game. We had many chances. We had to implement that aspect better. It’s our first game and we wanted to get into it. But I’m not too worried about the sequel. Ireland barely got into the circle. All we have to do now is finish those chances.”
In their second match in group A, the Panthers will take on South Korea (FIH 12) on Monday (at 2:15 PM). The group stage ends on Tuesday (at 5 p.m.) with a match against Ukraine (FIH 28). In group B, Great Britain (FIH 7), Spain (FIH 8), Canada (FIH 16) and Malaysia (FIH 18) meet. The top two from each group advance to the semi-finals. The two finalists and the winner of the consolation final can go to next summer’s Olympic hockey tournament in Paris (July 27-August 9).
Great Britain and Spain opened their qualifying tournament in Valencia with a win in Group B. The British women beat Canada 2-0. Host country Spain put Malaysia through the meat grinder (7-0). In group A there will be the match between South Korea and Ukraine later on Saturday evening (from 8:45 PM).
The Red Panthers, the vice-European champions, missed qualifying for the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro and 2021 Games in Tokyo, each time in shootouts. At their first and so far only participation, in London in 2012, they came eleventh.
