DUNCANNON, Pa. — Jillian Dietz is grappling with an unimaginable loss: the death of her husband, Douglas, and the alleged involvement of their 11-year-vintage son, Clayton, in his death. The tragedy unfolded in their Duncannon home early in the morning of January 13, 2026, and has left the community reeling. The case, centered around a dispute over a Nintendo Switch, has sparked a national conversation about youth violence, access to firearms, and the complexities of the justice system.

“I’ve lost both my husband and my son. Even wrap my head around it,” Jillian Dietz told The US Sun. “I will say this. My husband was the most amazing, incredible man. We were together for 11 years.” The details of the night are harrowing. Jillian Dietz awoke to the sound of her son, Clayton, allegedly shooting his adoptive father, according to police reports.

She attempted to rouse Douglas, 42, but found him unresponsive, discovering he had suffered a gunshot wound. She initially mistook the sound of his blood soaking into the bedding for dripping water, she told investigators. The couple had adopted Clayton in 2018, providing him with a home and family. The events leading up to the shooting began the previous day, Clayton’s birthday, which was celebrated with cake and well wishes.

A Birthday Gift and a Deadly Dispute

The situation escalated when Douglas Dietz told Clayton it was bedtime and confiscated his Nintendo Switch, locking it inside a gun safe, according to court records. Clayton reportedly became enraged. He allegedly told police he had a “good day” with his parents but became upset when his father took away the gaming console. The boy then allegedly took the key to the gun safe from his father’s drawer, retrieved the Switch, and also took his father’s revolver.

According to an affidavit, Clayton admitted to loading the gun and walking to his father’s side of the bed before firing the weapon. He stated he “had not thought about” the consequences of his actions. The Perry County 911 dispatch received a call around 3:20 a.m. On January 13, reporting the shooting. Upon arrival, Clayton allegedly screamed, “Daddy’s dead,” and confessed to his mother, “I killed Daddy.”

Charged as an Adult, Legal Battles Begin

Clayton Dietz has been charged as an adult with criminal homicide in connection with his father’s death. He appeared in Perry County Courthouse on February 19, surrounded by probation officers, according to reports. His defense attorney, Dave Wilson, intends to seek a transfer of the case to juvenile court, as reported by KTUV. Bail was denied, and Clayton remains confined at the Perry County Prison.

The decision to charge Clayton as an adult has drawn scrutiny, raising questions about the appropriate legal response to a crime committed by a child. Pennsylvania law allows for a child to be tried as an adult in cases involving serious offenses like homicide. The prosecution will likely argue for the severity of the crime and the need for accountability, while the defense will emphasize Clayton’s age and potential for rehabilitation.

A Community Mourns, a Family Shattered

Friends of the Dietz family have described Douglas as a kind and hardworking man. Raechal Stepp, Jillian Dietz’s best friend, told The US Sun that Douglas was a “sweet soul” who loved his wife unconditionally and was a devoted father. He also had older children from a previous relationship.

Stepp emphasized the profound grief Jillian is experiencing, stating, “Her husband may be gone, but her son is still here, and she loves him particularly much despite everything. He’s a child.” The tragedy highlights the complex emotions and challenges facing Jillian Dietz as she navigates the loss of her husband and the alleged actions of her son.

The case is expected to draw significant attention as it moves through the legal system. The next scheduled court date for Clayton Dietz is currently pending, as the defense pursues a transfer to juvenile court. The Perry County District Attorney’s office has not yet commented on the defense’s motion. This remains a developing story, and updates will be provided as they develop into available.
