Stating that 17 thousand tons of waste is produced daily in 12 city corporation areas of the country, Local Government Minister Tajul Islam said that initiatives have been taken to convert these wastes into resources including prevention of pollution through recycling. He also said that electricity will be produced from it.

The Minister of Local Government said this in response to the question of Noakhali-2 Constituency Government Member of Parliament Morshed Alam during the question and answer session of the National Parliament on Sunday (February 18). Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury presided over the question and answer session.

The local government minister said that 39 percent of the total waste produced by city corporations is produced in Dhaka city (Dhaka North and South City Corporation). Of this, 3213 tons in the south of Dhaka and 3400-3600 tons in the north. With the aim of generating electricity from waste in Dhaka North City Corporation area, an incineration plant construction project for generating electricity from waste at Amin Bazar Landfill has been undertaken through Bangladesh Power Development Board and WTE Power Plant North Dhaka Private Limited with the financing of China Machinery Engineering Corporation. Six proposals for generating electricity from waste in Dhaka South are under scrutiny.

He said, 13 proposals for waste power generation in Chittagong City Corporation area have been sent to the power department. Four institutions’ proposals were selected after scrutiny. Except for Barisal and Rajshahi City Corporation, the verification process of the proposals received with the aim of generating electricity from waste is ongoing.

The local government minister said that an incineration plant has been set up in the Chittagong City Corporation area to generate electricity from medical waste. Narayanganj City Corporation has signed an MoU with an organization named Waste Concern for setting up a medical incinerator.

In response to the question of Independent Member of Parliament Saiful Islam, Minister of Liberation War Affairs in charge of the Prime Minister’s Office AKM Mozammel Haque said that from February 2019 to 7 February 2024, a total of 536 foreign companies have been registered through Bidder One Stop Service Portal. Of which 268 are joint ventures and 268 are 100% foreign.
