The energy transition remains a pending subject in Catalonia, which is still far from meeting the objectives set by Europe. At the moment, there is 3,557.6 megawatts (MW) of installed power, five times lower than projected for 2030, within seven years. By then, the figure should be reached 15,408.4 MW produced by renewable energies. To set course towards this scenario, The Executive has drawn up a road map to aim for Catalonia to have a carbon-free energy system by 2050. This will imply, on the one hand, an investment of 84,361 million euros, of which 51,000 million must be invested exclusively in the development of renewable energies, and, on the other hand, the fact that 2.5% of the Catalan territory is occupied and dedicated to energy uses. In a first phase, with the horizon of 2030, Catalonia will have to to quintuple the power of renewable energy produced to meet the planned objectives.

In recent years, very few parks of this kind of energy have been built, barely around 100 wind power (not including self-consumption). But something has been changing for months now: almost 200 projects from dozens of companies are already on the Government’s table to receive the green light and start operating. Of these, 22 are wind and the rest, photovoltaic. With this, Catalonia will accelerate towards this 2030 goal.

Millionaire investment

There are still 12,000 megawatts of renewables to reach the 2030 goalbut it will still take more to get close to that of 2050. At that time, it is estimated that Catalonia will need 58,400 MW more renewables to have, then yes, a totally decarbonized electricity system. 18 times more megawatts than the current installed renewable power will be required.

This will imply, on the one hand, an investment of 84,361 million euros and on the other hand, the fact that 2.5% of the territory of Catalonia is occupied and dedicated to energy uses.

Right now, lmost of the wind farms that have already been built are located geographically in the south of Catalonia. Those that are further north are in the Conca de Barberà, Segarra and Anoia. However, this could change when the future park is built Galatea wind farm planned in the Alt Empordà and which already has the authorization of the Government.

The study done by l‘ICAEN considers that renewables must be installed minimizing the use of the territory, for this reason s‘has planned to occupy only 2.5% of the surface of Catalonia. An example of how to proceed is the recommendation for the installation of photovoltaics: the ideal, according to what the Government will approve this Tuesday, is that, in 40% of cases, it is built in artificial areas. In other words, industrial estates, degraded spaces or abandoned plots.

With the approval of this plan, they propose to speed up the steps for Catalonia to solve this subject that had been pending: the energy transition.
