2019 Easter Attack; Former President Maithripala Sirisena has been fined Rs 100 million by the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has ordered former President Maithripala Sirisena and four former officials to pay Rs 310 million as compensation to the victims of the 2019 Easter attack.

The court imposed the fine for neglecting to prevent one of the country’s deadliest terror attacks despite credible intelligence reports of an impending attack.

On Thursday, a seven-member bench of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka issued an order disposing of the petitions in this regard.

The court ruled that the then President Sirisena, who was also the Minister of Defense and Chief of the Armed Forces, must pay 100 million rupees (US$2.73,300) in damages from his personal assets.

Former police chief Pujith Jayasundara and former intelligence chief Nilantha Jayawardene each received Rs 75 million (US$2,04,975) and former defense secretary Hemasiri Fernando Rs 50 million (US). 136,650 dollars), the Supreme Court has imposed a compensation of 10 million rupees (27,330 US dollars) to former National Intelligence Service chief Sisira Mendis.
