Irish Literary Scene Celebrated as An Post Irish Book Awards Announce 2025 Shortlist
The An Post Irish Book Awards, marking its 20th year, has unveiled a diverse and compelling shortlist recognizing the breadth of Irish literary talent. From established authors to exciting newcomers, the awards encompass 19 categories, promising a vibrant celebration of Irish writing this November and December.
A Stellar Lineup of Nominees
This year’s shortlist boasts an impressive array of names, including Cecelia Ahern, Donal Ryan, Oscar-winning actor Brenda Fricker, and acclaimed novelist John Banville. Also recognized are RTÉ presenter Miriam O’Callaghan and former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, demonstrating the awards’ wide-reaching appeal and recognition of diverse voices.
According to a senior official associated with the awards, “The shortlist…highlights the extraordinary breadth and depth of talent among Irish writers. It’s inspiring to see such creativity and passion reflected across every category.”
The awards will recognize excellence across a wide spectrum of genres. Key categories include the prestigious Eason Novel of the Year, with nominations including Hugo Hamilton’s Conversation with the Sea, Elaine Feeney’s Let Me Go Mad in My Own Way, and Joseph O’Connor’s The Ghosts of Rome. Other notable categories include the Dubray Biography of the Year, featuring memoirs from Miriam O’Callaghan and Leo Varadkar alongside Brenda Fricker’s highly anticipated She Died Young: A Life in Fragments.
Celebrating Irish Bookshops and Emerging Talent
Beyond recognizing authors, the awards also champion the vital role of Irish bookshops, with a dedicated An Post Bookshop of the Year award. This year’s nominees include Antonia’s Bookstore in Trim, Chapters Bookstore in Dublin, and Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop in Galway.
The Sunday Independent Newcomer of the Year category spotlights rising stars in Irish literature, with nominees including Liadan Ní Chuinn for Every One Still Here and Claire Gleeson for Show Me Where It Hurts. This commitment to fostering new voices underscores the awards’ dedication to the future of Irish writing.
Voting and Award Ceremony Details
The public is invited to participate in the awards by casting their votes on the An Post Irish Book Awards website between 8pm on Wednesday, October 22nd, and 6:00pm on Sunday, November 16th. Voters will be entered into a draw for a chance to win one of five €100 National Book Tokens vouchers.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony in the Convention Centre, Dublin, on Thursday, November 27th. A special television program, hosted by Oliver Callan, will reveal the overall Irish Book of the Year winner on RTÉ One on Thursday, December 11th.
