Table of Contents
Disney is preparing to aggressively court advertisers with a series of three events designed to highlight its ad-tech capabilities, sports offerings, adn overall content slate, as the company prepares for its first Super Bowl broadcast in over two decades.
The entertainment and media giant announced plans for the events, which will culminate in a showcase during the industry’s annual “Upfront Week” in May. These presentations are crucial as Disney begins selling advertising inventory tied to Super Bowl LXI, scheduled for February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
Showcasing Technology and Sports
The first event, focused on technology and data capabilities, is slated for January 7. This will be followed by a sports-focused showcase on March 24. According to a memo released on Wednesday by Rita Ferro, president of Disney’s ad-sales operations, these events are part of a broader strategy.
“we’ve officially kicked off our roadmap, designed to showcase the full breadth of Disney’s capabilities – from content and franchises to data and technology,” Ferro stated.
Return to the Super Bowl Rotation
disney’s ABC network hasn’t aired the Super Bowl since 2006,but recently regained a position in the regular broadcast rotation through a new agreement with the NFL,alongside networks like Fox,NBC,and CBS. The return to this high-profile event is expected to significantly impact Disney’s advertising revenue.
The Enduring Power of Live Sports
The upcoming upfront sales process is particularly noteworthy given the shifting media landscape. While streaming services have impacted traditional primetime viewership, live sports continue to draw massive, simultaneous audiences. Advertisers are increasingly recognizing the value of these events, even those who previously focused on other forms of media.
One analyst noted that the ability to reach a large audience at the same time is a key driver for advertisers, making events like the Super Bowl particularly attractive. Moreover, live events like NFL or NBA games command attention in a way that on-demand programming simply cannot.
Super Bowl Advertising Costs Soar
The cost of advertising during the Super Bowl continues to climb. Earlier this year, NBCUniversal was reportedly seeking $7 million for a 30-second spot during its 2026 broadcast. Super Bowl LIX, which aired on Fox earlier in 2024, generated approximately $800 million in advertising revenue for the network.
Exploring Innovative Broadcast Strategies
Disney is also considering innovative approaches to its Super Bowl coverage. In 2012, ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro suggested the possibility of a “mega-cast” across Disney’s media portfolio, offering multiple broadcasts tailored to different audience segments. The company has been experimenting with similar multi-format broadcasts
