San Antonio Braces for Cold Front, Gusty Winds, and Chilly New Year’s Eve
A significant cold front is poised to sweep through San Antonio late Sunday night, ushering in a period of dramatically colder temperatures and potentially hazardous wind gusts. Residents are urged to prepare for a chilly New Year’s Eve as temperatures could dip to freezing in areas outside of Bexar County.
Weekend Forecast: Warmth Gives Way to Winter Chill
The weekend begins with relatively mild conditions across Texas, ideal for holiday travel. However, this tranquility will be short-lived. According to KSAT meteorologists, a strong cold front will dramatically alter the weather pattern, bringing a sharp temperature drop and gusty winds.
Sunday will start with fog in western areas, dissipating by 9 a.m., followed by cloudy skies with limited sunshine. Highs are expected to reach the upper 70s. However, residents should take advantage of the milder temperatures to secure any loose outdoor holiday decorations.
Winds to Gust Up to 40 mph, Posing a Hazard
The primary concern as the front approaches is the wind. Gusts could reach up to 40 mph, creating hazardous conditions and potentially damaging unsecured items. “Secure loose holiday decorations Sunday before the front arrives as winds could gust up to 40 mph,” a KSAT forecaster advised. The strong winds are expected to continue as the front moves through the region.
Monday’s Forecast: Freezing Temperatures and a Slight Rain Chance
Monday morning will bring a significant temperature plunge, with lows expected in the 30s and 40s for many. There is a slight chance of rain accompanying the front. While the winds will remain a major factor, the cold temperatures will also pose a risk, particularly for vulnerable populations.
Looking Ahead to New Year’s Eve and Beyond
The colder air will linger through the end of 2025, with Wednesday anticipated to be the coldest morning of the week. Outside of Bexar County, temperatures could fall to freezing. Fortunately, a warming trend is forecast to begin as the calendar turns to 2026, offering a brighter outlook for the new year.
