Local Schools Win Big in Olentzero and Maridomingi 2025 Poster Contest

A celebration of Basque culture and artistic talent has concluded with the announcement of winners in the Olentzero and Maridomingi 2025 poster contest. The annual competition, designed to engage students in the traditions surrounding these beloved figures, saw notable submissions from schools across the region. Celebrating young Artists in the Aranguren Valley
The Olentzero and Maridomingi poster contest, a cornerstone of cultural education in the Aranguren Valley, concluded with awards presented to CP San Pedro IP and CP Irulegi IP. CP San Pedro IP secured the top prize in the category for students in 1st through 3rd grade, while CP Irulegi IP’s artwork was selected as the winner among 4th, 5th, and 6th graders.
According to a statement from the Basque Language Service, the winning schools will each receive a €100 prize. This funding is specifically earmarked for the purchase of teaching materials in Basque, furthering the commitment to language preservation and cultural enrichment.
Posters Bring Holiday Cheer to the Community
The impact of these young artists extends beyond the classroom and prize money. The winning posters have been put to immediate use in promoting the arrival of Olentzero and Maridomingi throughout the Valley. The artwork from CP San Pedro IP is currently being used to announce the festivities in three towns, while the design from CP Irulegi IP is informing residents of the celebrations at Multi eleven.
“It’s wonderful to see the creativity of these students directly contributing to the joy of the holiday season,” a senior official stated.
Public Exhibition Showcases Student Talent
Beyond the winning entries,a broader showcase of student creativity is planned. A selection of submissions from all participating classes – encompassing students from 1st to 6th grade – will be exhibited at the House of Culture in the Aranguren Valley. The exhibition will run from March 16 to december 30, 2025, offering the public a chance to appreciate the artistic talents of the region’s youth.
The Basque Language Service expressed its gratitude to all participating classrooms, acknowledging their dedication and enthusiasm. “We congratulate the winning classes and thank all those who submitted their work,” the service noted. “We look forward to welcoming the community to the exhibition at the House of Culture!”
