A mine collapsed in northwest Tanzania as a result of heavy rain. 22 people died – even though the mine was closed for safety reasons at the time of the accident.

22 people have been found dead after a mine collapsed in northwest Tanzania. An emergency services spokesman said on Sunday that the mine collapsed on Saturday after heavy rain. The rescue operation could only begin late after the accident – on Sunday morning – due to a lack of equipment.

According to the information, the mine had already been closed by the operator for safety reasons before the collapse. However, it is not unusual for young men in the region to dig for gold sand in the closed mines.

For weeks there have been repeated heavy rains in East Africa, caused by the El Niño weather phenomenon. Landslides have occurred repeatedly in Tanzania as a result of these storms. In December, 60 people were killed and more than 100 injured in the north of the country.
