2K Games to Shut Down NBA 2K25 Servers and MyCareer Mode in 2026

Publisher 2K Games will delist sports sim NBA 2K25 from digital storefronts on October 30, 2026, and shut down its online servers on December 31, 2026. This sunsetting permanently disables multiplayer matchmaking, online features, and the single-player MyCareer story mode as of January 1, 2027, just over two years after the game’s release.

Released on September 6, 2024, the basketball title is being stripped from digital marketplaces barely two years after launch. While online service closures are standard for aging software, publishers typically maintain active servers for many years. For annual sports franchises, however, 2K Games and parent company Take-Two Interactive follow a lifecycle that phases out older iterations shortly after newer sequels arrive.

As fresh players migrate to the current game, active user counts on the 2024 installment drop sharply. Maintaining dedicated servers, deploying patches, and generating new content for an older edition incurs financial and operational overhead for the publisher. NBA 2K25 was released on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch on September 6th, 2024, with crossplay available exclusively on New-Gen consoles.

Server Shutdowns Disabling Single-Player MyCareer and MyTeam

The upcoming server termination impacts far more than traditional multiplayer matches. Because core single-player modes like MyCareer and MyTeam rely continuously on online server communication and virtual currency progression, the solo story mode becomes entirely unplayable once the shutdown takes effect.

As of January 1, 2027, you’ll no longer be able to play multiplayer games or access any online game modes. MyCareer and MyTeam will no longer be available, and it will no longer be possible to earn virtual currency (VC). “While you will still be able to enjoy Play Now, MyNBA, The W, and MyWNBA, any features that require a connection to 2K servers will be unavailable. This includes multiplayer, Online Leagues, and community sharing.”

Players who already own a digital or physical copy of NBA 2K25 retain the ability to redownload and play offline modes. However, offline access is restricted solely to Play Now, MyNBA, The W, and MyWNBA, leaving major progression-based features permanently dark.

Server Cuts Strip Consumers of Software Ownership

The swift decommissioning of NBA 2K25 mirrors previous cuts across the publisher’s sports catalog. Last year, NBA 2K24 was delisted and shut down on December 31, 2025, matching the seasonal cadence now applied to the 2024 game. Earlier titles such as WWE 2K24 also faced server reductions designed to funnel active players toward newer software releases.

Commentators and community members point out that tying fundamental progression systems to remote servers strips consumers of true software ownership. Without local saves or an offline progression fallback, a game purchased digitally or physically can be rendered functionally incomplete within 24 months of release.

NBA Partnership Grows as 2K25 Services End

The server phase-out occurs against a backdrop of long-term commercial growth for the publisher. Last year, the National Basketball Association extended its relationship with 2K through a multiyear global partnership expansion, and 2K confirmed its NBA series has sold over 150 million units globally.

For current owners of NBA 2K25, the digital storefront cutoff arrives on October 30, 2026, followed by the complete cessation of online services on December 31, 2026.
