3 Balance Tests to See If You’re Fit After 60, Trainer Says

Bickerstaff explains, “These types of movements challenge the stabilizing muscles around the hips and ankles, which are essential for maintaining balance and preventing falls. They similarly reflect how well your body coordinates movement during everyday tasks like walking or climbing stairs.” Here are three positions, demonstrated with accompanying videos, that can help you assess and improve your balance.

Single Leg Stand

The single leg stand is a fundamental test of stability and coordination. “Single leg stands present strong stability and coordination as we age,” says Bickerstaff. “It challenges and strengthens the stabilising muscles around our ankles and hips, which play a major role in preventing falls and contribute to daily tasks like climbing stairs.”

How to do it:

  1. Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Keep your chest upright and your gaze focused straight ahead.
  3. Place your hands by your sides or rest them on your hips.
  4. Slowly lift one foot off the floor.
  5. Balance on the standing leg whereas keeping your torso steady.
  6. Avoid gripping your toes or leaning heavily to one side.
  7. Hold the position for 20 to 30 seconds.
  8. Lower your foot back to the floor and switch legs.
  9. Complete 2 to 3 rounds per leg. Rest for 30 to 45 seconds between rounds.

Heel-to-Toe Tandem Stand

The tandem stand, also known as the line walk, significantly challenges your balance by narrowing your base of support. When your feet are positioned directly in front of one another, your body relies more heavily on its stabilizing muscles and postural control to remain upright.

How to do it:

  1. Stand upright with your feet together.
  2. Step one foot directly in front of the other.
  3. Position your heel of your front foot so it touches the toes of the back foot.
  4. Keep your posture tall and your shoulders relaxed.
  5. Allow your arms to rest by your sides or extend them slightly for balance.
  6. Focus your eyes on a fixed point straight ahead.
  7. Hold the position for 20 to 30 seconds.
  8. Switch which foot is in front and repeat.
  9. Perform 2 to 3 rounds per side, resting for 30 to 45 seconds between holds.

Standing March Hold

The standing march hold simulates the balance required for walking and climbing stairs. As you lift one leg off the ground, your body must engage its core, hips, and supporting leg to maintain stability. “A controlled march hold strengthens your hip flexors, glutes, and core muscles,” Bickerstaff notes.

How to do it:

  1. Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Flex your core muscles and maintain an upright posture.
  3. Slowly lift one knee upward until your thigh is roughly parallel to the floor.
  4. Keep your hips level and avoid leaning to one side.
  5. Hold the lifted position while maintaining a steady balance.
  6. Keep your gaze forward and your shoulders relaxed.
  7. Hold for 15 to 20 seconds.
  8. Lower your foot slowly back to the ground.
  9. Switch sides and repeat.
  10. Aim for 2 to 3 sets per leg. Rest for 30 to 45 seconds between sets.

Incorporating these exercises into your routine can significantly improve your balance and reduce your risk of falls.
