In Germany, researchers from University of Tubingen found human and animal footprints dating back approximately 300,000 years. The discovery was made in the Paleolithic site complex located in Lower Saxony.

According to research, the prints are of an extinct species called Homo heidelbergensis, which are surrounded by several footprints of animals.

“For the first time, we have examined in detail the fossil footprints of two sites in Schoningen, Germany, these traces together with information from various analyzes provide us with data on the paleoenvironment and the mammals that inhabited the area”, said Dr Flavio Altamura, member of the Center Senckenberg Professor of Human Evolution and Paleoenvironment at the University of Tubingen.

In addition to the human footprints found in Germany, the researchers also found animal tracks, of elephants that belonged to a species extinct call Palaeoloxodon ancient. “The elephant footprints that we discovered reach a remarkable length of 55 centimetres”, explains the head of the excavation, Jordi Serangeli.

Rhino footprints were also found. “A trait also comes from the rhinoceros Stephanorhinus hemitoechusthe first footprint of the species found in Europe”, observes the head of the excavation.
