A new era of healthcare is dawning in western Broward County, Florida, as Baptist Health South Florida and Turner Construction Co. commenced construction on the state-of-the-art Baptist Health Sunrise Hospital on January 28. The more than $500 million project promises to expand access to world-class medical care for families throughout the region, with an anticipated opening in 2029.
A Pivotal Expansion for Baptist Health
The groundbreaking ceremony, held at 12401 W. Oakland Park Blvd. in Sunrise, drew leaders from Baptist Health, Turner Construction, and the local community. “This groundbreaking of Baptist Health Sunrise Hospital, our first hospital in Broward, marks a pivotal moment in our journey to expand trusted, compassionate care across the region,” stated a senior official from Baptist Health. “It reflects our unwavering commitment to strengthening care access for the families we serve and ensuring that world-class care is always close to home.”
Cutting-Edge Facility Details
The planned seven-story hospital will span 340,000 square feet and feature a comprehensive range of medical services. Upon completion, the facility will boast 100 inpatient beds – including 10 dedicated to critical care – and a 30-bed emergency department equipped with three triage areas. Four surgical suites will incorporate robotic-assisted surgery capabilities, enhancing precision and patient outcomes. Adjacent to the hospital, a 25,000-square-foot medical office building will house a variety of specialized services.
Resiliency and Future-Proofing Healthcare
Beyond core clinical spaces, the campus is designed with long-term sustainability and adaptability in mind. Turner Construction emphasized the project’s focus on resiliency, incorporating a central energy plant to ensure uninterrupted operations during power outages or severe weather events. The hospital’s infrastructure is also being built to accommodate the rapid evolution of healthcare technology, including the integration of AI-enabled clinical systems and seamless connectivity with the broader Baptist Health network.
“This project reflects a significant investment in the future of healthcare for the Sunrise community,” said a representative from Turner Construction. “Turner is proud to partner with Baptist Health on a hospital that prioritizes resiliency, advanced technology, and a patient-focused environment while enabling flexibility to grow alongside the community it serves.”
Conservation and Community Integration
The campus plan also prioritizes environmental stewardship. A 15-acre conservation easement will protect nearby wetlands and local biodiversity. Furthermore, the site will provide ample parking with a total of 1,080 spaces distributed across a five-story parking garage and surface lots.
The development of Baptist Health Sunrise Hospital represents a significant step forward in expanding access to advanced medical care in Broward County, promising a future of innovative and compassionate healthcare for the region’s residents.
