Punjab: After the efforts of MP Balbir Singh Seechewal, six youths trapped in Russian jail have been able to return to their homes.

Those who returned home include Balwinder Singh of Fazilka, Gurmeet Singh of Kapurthala, Gurvish Singh and Harjeet Singh of Gurdaspur, Lakhveer Singh of Jalandhar and Rahul of Karnal (Haryana). The age of all of them is between 18 to 24 years. The youth told that the travel agent had taken Rs 13 lakh each from them for sending them to Spain. He told that the agent took him first to Oman and then to Moscow. The agent shared with them a plan to enter Europe through the forests of Belarus. But he was captured, beaten and then left in the forests of Belarus for several days. They had very little food and had to walk through the forests for 14 hours, surviving on leaves and drinking water.

When they could not enter Europe, they returned to Russia where agents made another attempt to get them across the Russia-Finland border, but police caught them and they were jailed in Russia. The youth somehow contacted Seechewal on 17 and 20 December.

The MP said he contacted the Indian Embassy in Moscow, which helped him return to India on December 24.
