6-year-old boy accidentally gets on the wrong flight and lands 270 kilometers from his destination
A 6-year-old boy named Casper had a harrowing experience when he accidentally boarded the wrong flight of American airline “Spirit Airlines” and ended up about 270 kilometers away from where he was supposed to go.
Casper was supposed to fly alone from Philadelphia to the Southwest Florida Airport in Fort Myers during the height of the tourist season. However, when the plane landed, family members realized that Casper had not reached his intended destination. His grandmother, Maria Ramos, was shocked and panicked when she found out. “They told me, ‘He’s not on this flight. He missed his flight.’ I said: ‘There’s no way he missed it, I have his check-in tag.’ I ran inside the plane and asked the flight attendant, ‘Where’s my grandson? It was Casper’s first time flying alone, and he had accidentally arrived at the Orlando airport, which is a distance of 160 miles from the airport in Fort Myers. Maria had to drive for hours to pick up her grandson and bring him back safely. While the airline offered her a refund for the trip, all Maria wanted was an explanation for what had happened. “How did this happen? Did they take him off the plane? Maybe the flight attendant forgot about him and allowed him to get on another flight by mistake?”
Spirit Airlines has since apologized for the incident and issued an official statement in response. “On December 21, an unaccompanied child flying from Philadelphia to Fort Myers was mistakenly boarded on a flight to Orlando. The child was under the supervision of Spirit staff the entire time, and when we discovered the mistake, we acted immediately to contact the family. We take seriously the safety and responsibility of flying all our passengers, and are conducting an internal investigation into the matter. We apologize to the family for the unusual case.”
The incident has raised concerns about the safety and supervision of unaccompanied minors on flights, and many are hoping that the airline will take necessary measures to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
