“Starry Night over Chiang Mai” to Blend Astronomy and Remembrance in November 2025

A unique stargazing event in Chiang Mai, Thailand, will honor Her Majesty Queen Sirikit while offering a captivating celestial experience for attendees.

the national Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT), in collaboration with Chiang Mai Province and the Chiang Mai Provincial Administrative Organization, will host “Starry Night over chiang Mai” on November 3-4, 2025. The event, themed “Moon Night Party in the Park,” will combine astronomical observation with a solemn ceremony dedicated to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, expressing gratitude for her enduring grace.

the event will take place from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM each evening at the Chiang Mai Provincial Administrative Organization garden, coinciding with the transition from the rainy season to winter. Organizers have confirmed that while activities will proceed as scheduled, the format will be adjusted to align with guidelines issued by the Office of the Prime Minister, reflecting the period of national mourning.

“Starry night over Chiang Mai” promises a comprehensive array of astronomy-focused activities designed to engage residents of all ages and levels of experience. A central feature will be a telescope caravan, boasting over 50 telescopes provided by NARIT,partnered astronomy schools, and amateur astronomers. This will allow attendees to directly observe celestial objects, including the Moon and Saturn, through high-powered optics.

Did you know? – Saturn’s rings are primarily composed of ice particles, with some rocky debris and dust. These particles range in size from tiny grains to several meters across.

For those eager to capture the beauty of the night sky,a dedicated zone will offer guidance on taking photos of celestial objects using mobile phones. Participants will be able to photograph the Moon and Saturn by simply aligning their phone cameras with the telescope’s eyepiece, creating stunning images with ease.

Beyond telescopic viewing, the event will encourage hands-on exploration. Attendees can utilize binoculars and NARIT’s “NAPA Star Map” application to independently locate and identify stars. A stellar Light Box activity will invite creativity through the construction of DIY constellation displays.

Immersive experiences are also planned, including a “Glow in the Dark” zone with body painting and a Planet Garden featuring large planetary balloon installations. A Galaxy Walk will offer a simulated journey through the cosmos, while a Special Talk will delve into “The Secret of the Moon.”

according to event organizers, potential celestial sights on november 3-4 include the Moon, Saturn, the Pleiades star cluster, and the Andromeda galaxy, contingent on favorable weather conditions. A clear sky is hoped for to maximize viewing opportunities.

Pro tip: – Download a stargazing app before the event. These apps can definitely help you identify constellations and planets, even without a telescope, enhancing your viewing experience.

Adding to the excitement, attendees will have the chance to win a telescope and other special prizes. participation in “Starry Night over Chiang Mai” is free of charge.
