In these difficult times it is going through, Burkina Faso can count on the support of the AfDB Group.

A support reaffirmed by the Deputy Director General West of the AfDB, Dr Joseph Martial Ribeiro, during an audience with the Prime Minister, Me Apollinaire Joachimson Kyelem de Tambela, this Wednesday, May 23, 2023.

“We carry a message of support and friendship from our President, Dr. Akinwumi A. Adesina, to the authorities of the Transition. We are aware of all the efforts they make to meet the various challenges. The AfDB has always been at Burkina Faso’s side and we will continue our commitment within the framework of the Action Plan for Stabilization and Development. For us, Burkina Faso is a key country in the sub-region,” said Dr. Joseph Martial Ribeiro, Deputy Director General West of the AfDB.

He added that the delegation he is leading is on a dialogue mission in our country, and that a high-level meeting between the Government of Burkina Faso and the AfDB took place on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, in Ouagadougou.

This working session between the AfDB and the sectoral ministries of the Burkinabè Government, he said, made it possible to discuss and harmonize the new priorities of the Transition defined through the Action Plan for Stabilization and Development. (PA-SD) 2023-2025, with the Bank’s work program over the same period.

According to him, to date, the active portfolio of the AfDB in Burkina Faso includes twenty-one (21) Development Projects and Programs with a total amount of about 500 billion CFA francs.

It operates in several development sectors, particularly in infrastructure, agriculture, energy, environment, drinking water supply and sanitation, and humanitarian action.

In addition, he informed of the holding of the 58th Annual Meeting of Governors of the AfDB Group from May 22 to 26, 2023, in Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt, and as such he wished to receive the orientations of the Head of Government. in order to better support our country.

In this regard, the Head of Government said that the AfDB is sufficiently aware of the challenges of our country.

According to him, despite the presence of the AfDB at our side, our country has not really progressed in terms of development. For him, this is a bankruptcy of the ADB which is a development bank.

Then, he presented to his hosts the vision of the Transition which focuses on two objectives: short-term projects and grassroots development projects.

“What matters to us is the development of Burkina Faso. We will lay the groundwork for this development,” he explained. Moreover, he insisted on the fact that the AfDB must invest a lot in communication channels, especially road and rail infrastructure.

“Before health and education, there is the road. When I say that, some people are surprised, but the road is the main engine of development. A school and a health center built without access roads have no real impact on the populations. We also insist on sub-regional integration projects in terms of communication routes, namely the construction of the Bobo-Sikasso-Bamako-Conakry railway, the Lomé-Ouagadougou railway, etc. “, affirmed the Head of Government.

He further advocated that the AfDB change its strategies with regard to its interventions, for a given period.

“We must ensure that our countries come out of poverty. The AfDB can carry out most of its interventions, ie structuring investments in a given area. For example, it can decree 2024 as the year of Burkina Faso and invest massively there, and then move on to another country, in 2025,” he said.

During this meeting, the two parties also discussed other topics.

These are the creation of jobs for young people and the mobilization of resources from the diasporas (the diaspora from other countries living in Burkina Faso and the Burkinabè diaspora abroad).

To this, Mr. Ribeiro hinted that the AfDB is straddling all these subjects and will take them into account in its projects.
