Scientists of the Urals found the remains of reptiles aged 45 million years on the Miass River

Scientists from the Ural Institute of Animal and Plant Ecology of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Ural Federal University discovered reptile remains 45 million years old on the Miass River in the Kurgan Region. These finds prove that there was a sea in the Urals in the Late Eocene. About it reported agency URA.Ru in the press service of UrFU.

Among the discovered samples – the vertebra of a sea snake and a piece of the shell of an ancient turtle.

In addition, the teeth of large sharks and the remains of bony fish were found. Virtually all of the fossils have been found on the steep slopes of the river and are virtually untouched. The approximate age of the bones is estimated at 45-35 million years, and more accurate dating will be known after the completion of research.

The head of the excavations, Dmitry Gimranov, noted that the fossil remains of Paleogene snakes and other aquatic creatures are well known to scientists, but are very rare for the Urals. All finds will be sent for research to the Paleontological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow.
