DECRYPTION – Imports of low-cost poultry from Ukraine have soared in Europe since 2022. French breeders denounce “unfair competition”.

In the first half of 2023, they jumped 74% in one year. On paper, there is nothing to panic about: Ukrainian imports only represented 8.1 million euros over this period, or less than 1% of total poultry imports into France, and therefore far behind the contingents from from Thailand or Brazil. But the profession is not fooled. “Poultry from Ukraine is first cut up and processed in Dutch or Hungarian factories before arriving in France.», argues Yann Nédélec. Once processed in European factories, the meat loses its traceability.
