Ex-president Petro Poroshenko, who returned to Ukraine, could not be detained at the Kiev airport. The State Bureau of Investigation of Ukraine reported that its employees tried to serve Mr. Poroshenko with a subpoena, but he refused to accept it. Now, the department expects that the suspect himself will appear today at a meeting in the Pechersk District Court in the case of treason, in which the ex-president is a suspect.

Mr. Poroshenko himself, before boarding the plane to Kiev, stated that he “won’t allow himself to be put on board.” He reported that he planned the time after returning to his homeland. After an attempt to detain him in the border control zone of the airport, the ex-president went to the waiting room, where his supporters gathered. According to him, 15 thousand people came to support him, and the authorities, frightened by such a large number of people, did not detain him.

Mr. Poroshenko, speaking to supporters at the airport, called for the opponents of the current President Zelensky to unite. “It is very important that representatives of other political democratic forces are with us, which is now a symbol of our unification, because now we must unite and show that a united Ukraine is strong,” he said. The ex-president also said that the authorities had crossed “red lines” with the treason case against him. He did not explain what he meant by that.

The case of Petro Poroshenko is connected with the supply of coal from the Donbass. Earlier, the ex-president stated that 130 criminal cases were initiated against him, but about 40 of them were closed. His lawyer, Ilya Novikov, claims that there is an arrest warrant for the ex-president. Earlier, the court arrested all his property. Another suspect in the treason case is the head of the political council of the Opposition Platform – For Life party, Viktor Medvedchuk. He is under house arrest.
