Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives. Tajul Islam said that the port city of Chittagong has always played a role in the development of Bangladesh. Chittagong is the economic capital of Bangladesh. Chittagong’s contribution to the country’s economic development is undeniable. Therefore, the development of Chittagong is very important to achieve the goal that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has set to build a developed Bangladesh by 2041.

He said these things in the speech of the chief guest at the Sudhi rally on the occasion of the third anniversary of the sixth elected council of Chittagong City Corporation on Saturday (March 9).

Md. Tajul Islam said that strengthening the local government does not only mean the allocation, but also means the establishment of self-reliant local government by creating opportunities to increase the income of the people in certain areas. Every city corporation, municipality, upazila parishad should think about creating employment opportunities for people in their respective areas. People will feel motivated to pay revenue if people’s income increases and civic services are easily available.

Adequate allocation has been given for the Chittagong City Corporation, the minister said, noting that all levels of the City Corporation should work sincerely so that the people get the benefit of that allocation properly. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is determined to make Chittagong a congestion and waterlogging free city.

The local government minister assured all possible cooperation from the ministry in any initiative taken to widen the road to ease traffic congestion in Chittagong city.

Placing importance on strengthening Chittagong city’s waste management through incineration, the minister said there is no alternative to protect the Karnaphuli River and the Bay of Bengal from pollution.

He said, Chittagong City Corporation will be given ID number to renovate the roads, so that there is no repetition in getting allocation on the same road.

Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation presided over the event. Rezaul Karim Chowdhury. Members of Parliament M Abdul Latif, Mohiuddin Bachchu and Abdus Salam, former Mayor Mahmudul Islam, Assistant High Commissioner of Indian Embassy Rajiv Ranjan were present.
