“As far as I understand, the chancellor believes that since he is a representative of a non-nuclear state, this is the only weapon that Germany has and it is the most powerful,” V. Zelensky said about the Taurus missiles in an interview with Axel Springer. “He shared messages with me saying he couldn’t leave his country without such a powerful weapon.”

V. Zelenskis noted that he does not see logic in O. Scholz’s arguments: “Any missiles will not protect anyone from nuclear strikes if, God forbid, a nuclear war breaks out.”

“It’s very important that people know that you have something special, some special weapons. And if there is a war, it will be useful,” he added.

But the German government, at least publicly, presents a very different logic for not sending weapons. O. Scholz strongly refused to send Taurus missiles to Ukraine, saying publicly that such a move could lead to an escalation of the war and even involve Germany in a direct conflict with Russia. In addition, together with the “Taurus” missiles, German soldiers should also go to Ukraine.

Observers note that Scholz himself portrays himself in German society as a leader who can provide aid to Ukraine without overstepping the bounds that would lead to a wider war. Some politicians in his own center-left Social Democratic Party refer to him as the “peace chancellor” because of this attitude.

Although members of his own coalition government and conservative opposition leaders have urged him to send Taurus missiles to Ukraine, Scholz has refused to do so, saying it would provoke Russia.

“This is a line that I do not want to cross as chancellor,” O. Scholz defended himself in March. “I am responsible for keeping Germany out of this war.”

In his interview, Zelensky attacked not only Germany’s reluctance to send missiles, but also Washington’s pace.

“I always follow logic in my steps, words and conclusions,” he said. – And I just don’t understand the logic when, for example, one of our partners has the weapons that Ukraine needs today to survive. And I don’t understand why they don’t want to give it to us.”
