Turkey condemned an attack by the Israeli army against a team of the Turkish state television TRT in Gaza today, in which a freelance cameraman working for the television was injured, reports the Anadolu Agency, quoted by BTA.
“We condemn this heinous attack. This is terrorism. This terrorism must stop and the Western world must oppose this cruelty as soon as possible,” Turkey’s communications director Fahrettin Altun said on the Ex social network.
A vehicle belonging to a team of TRT Arabic (TRT channel broadcasting in Arabic), which was preparing to broadcast from the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, was attacked by the Israeli army, the agency said.
Sami Shaheda, who works as a freelance cameraman for the television station, was seriously injured and underwent surgery. TRT Arabic reporter Sami Berhum was not injured.
“Israel targets journalists and attacks freedom of the press to prevent its massacres from being seen. The international community’s indifference to these attacks also emboldens Israel,” Altun added.
He called on the international community to take action against the atrocities and said those who “remain silent in the face of these systematic attacks are complicit in Israel’s crimes of genocide”.
According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CJP), a New York-based association, at least 95 journalists have been killed since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas on October 7, 90 of them Palestinians, and at least 16 others were injured, reports AFP.
