Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSS) said today it had detained a man it said tried to kill a former Ukrainian intelligence officer in Moscow on Kiev’s orders by planting a bomb in his car, Reuters reported.
On April 12, a powerful explosion destroyed the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado car, which was owned by Vasyl Prozorov, a former lieutenant colonel of the Security Service of Ukraine. The bomb was triggered the moment Prozorov pressed the gas. He survived the attack but suffered wounds to his limbs.
The man, who now lives in Russia, told the Russian news agency RIA Novosti how in 2014 he began using his position in Ukrainian intelligence to pass classified information to Russian secret services for ideological reasons.
The FSS today released a statement saying it had detained a Russian national who worked for the Security Service of Ukraine and planted the bomb in the car of the former Ukrainian intelligence officer.
State media released footage of the arrested man’s confession. The FSS statement said he was charged with attempted murder and illegal possession of explosives. The investigators are checking whether he may be charged with treason and terrorism, which in Russia are punishable by life imprisonment, BTA reports.
