Hamburg – FC St. Pauli was unable to regain the lead in the 2nd Bundesliga one day after Holstein Kiel’s victory. The Hanseatic League surprisingly lost 3:4 (1:0) at home against SV Elversberg and is therefore one point behind Kiel. Holstein had won 4-0 against Osnabrück the day before.
The clever Elversberg team turned the game around after being behind twice and benefited from Hamburg’s weak defense. Johannes Eggestein (40th minute), Marcel Hartel (69th) and captain Jackson Irvine (90th + 3) scored the goals for Hamburg in front of 29,546 spectators, Maurice Neubauer (52nd), Joseph Boyamba (70th), Paul Wanner (81st) and Hugo Vandermersch (83rd) were successful for the SVE.
The Hanseatic League’s defense seemed anything but secure. The Kiez club clearly had more of the game, but the guests created the better chances, especially in the first half. St. Pauli’s goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj made several strong saves and prevented the team from falling behind. Eggestein redeemed the hosts, who took an undeserved lead shortly before the break.
Elversberg came out of halftime well and was now rewarded for their great performance. Full-back Neubauer equalized with a low shot into the far corner. St. Pauli then turned things up, but missed many opportunities. Boyamba equalized Hartel’s lead just a minute later. The strong Bayern loanees Wanner and Vandermersch then gave the Saarland team a 4-2 lead. Irvine caused tension again shortly before the end.
