The Ukrainian army announced on Friday that it had shot down a long-range Russian strategic bomber that was used to fire cruise missiles at cities across the country, in a development that is the first of its kind since the Russian-Ukrainian war.
The army said in a statement posted on social media: “For the first time, anti-aircraft missile units of the Air Force, in cooperation with Ukrainian military intelligence, destroyed a Tu-22M3 long-range strategic bomber.”
Russian officials said that the bomber crashed over the Stavropol region upon returning to its base, confirming the death of a crew member.
The official Russian TASS news agency quoted the Ministry of Defense as saying, “A Russian Air Force TU-22M3 plane crashed in the Stavropol region while returning to the air base after carrying out a combat mission, and the pilots jumped out.”
