Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his gratitude for the passage of the 84 trillion won aid package for his country by the U.S. House of Representatives on the 20th (local time). Russia, which has been invading Ukraine for more than two years, strongly opposed the move.
According to Reuters and AFP, President Zelensky wrote on the social media platform
President Zelensky said of this bill, “It will help prevent the escalation of war, save tens of thousands of lives, and help both countries become stronger.” In a video posted later, he said, “I expect our soldiers on the front lines will feel it.”
He also praised America’s leadership in maintaining the rules-based international order and said, “We will end this war justly with the support of the United States.” He then directly mentioned Russian President Vladimir Putin and said, “This is a war that Putin must lose.”
Earlier, the U.S. House of Representatives held a plenary session on this day and passed a Ukraine aid bill worth $60.8 billion (about 84 trillion won) with 311 votes in favor and 112 votes against.
According to the bill, $23 billion was allocated to replenish U.S. weapons, stockpiles, and facilities; $11 billion was allocated to U.S. military operations in Europe; and $14 billion was allocated to purchase advanced weapon systems and defense equipment for the Ukrainian military. Additionally, Russian assets (approximately $6 billion) frozen in U.S. banks can now be transferred to Ukraine.
On the same day, in the plenary session of the House of Representatives, along with the Ukraine aid bill, bills supporting Israel and Taiwan were also voted on. A total of three foreign security support bills (totaling $95.3 billion, approximately 131 trillion dollars) were submitted to the Senate side by side. The Senate vote is expected to take place as early as the 23rd.
When news of the bill’s passage broke, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that the situation in Ukraine would worsen.
Spokesperson Peskov told Russia’s state-run TASS news agency on the same day that the country would respond to the Ukraine aid plan with measures that suit its interests, adding, “The United States will become richer, but Ukraine will be further destroyed and more Ukrainians will be killed.” insisted.
The spokesperson went on to call the transfer of Russia’s frozen assets to Ukraine an act of irreparable damage to the image of the United States that recognizes private property.
On the same day, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova wrote on Telegram that the U.S. foreign security support bills “will deepen the crisis around the world,” and that “they are interference in China’s internal affairs and are a direct path to escalation of war for Israel.” “Military support for the Ukrainian regime is direct sponsorship of terrorist activities,” she said.
