Israel carried out heavy airstrikes on southern Lebanon today, and Hezbollah said it launched explosive drones and fired powerful rockets at Israeli targets, Reuters reported.
Three people were killed in Israeli strikes on Lebanon, security sources said.
The conflict between Hezbollah and Israel has been ongoing since October alongside the Gaza war and has displaced tens of thousands of people on both sides of the border and fueled fears of a wider war between the heavily armed rivals.
The Israeli army said it struck Hezbollah military structures and infrastructure in three locations in southern Lebanon, including more than 20 strikes against Hezbollah targets in the southern Lebanon village area.
Hezbollah said it launched explosive drones at a military command center on Israel’s northern border and fired Burkan rockets, which have a high impact.
Two security officials said Israel used high-powered munitions in an apparent attempt to strike Hezbollah’s underground bunkers.
The displacement of some 60,000 residents of northern Israel has sparked calls in Israel for tougher military action against Hezbollah. Across the border, in Lebanon, some 90,000 people have also been displaced by Israeli strikes, Reuters notes.
In April, Israel’s military said it had completed its next step in preparations for a possible war with Hezbollah.
According to Lebanese sources, more than 250 Hezbollah members and 75 civilians have been killed in Israeli strikes since October. About 20 people were killed in Israel, including soldiers and civilians.
The United States and France are trying to quell the conflict through diplomacy, writes BTA.
