Niger – The United States proceeded, this Monday, August 5, 2024, to restore its last military base in the country.
The rest after this announcement
The transfer of their last military base to Niger authorities ends the American military presence in the country.
The deadline for their departure is set for September 15, the Americans gave the keys to airbase 201 in Agadez, which is one of the two main centers they use for their anti-terrorist operations in Niger.
Already in July, American troops withdrew from Air Base 101, a small drone base located in the capital, Niamey.
The withdrawal comes in a wider context, with German troops also scheduled to leave the country this month.
The move reflects a general trend away from Western forces in the Sahel, a large region south of the Sahara where groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State are active.
