Opposition Celebrates as Sheikh Hasina’s Grip on Bangladesh Wanes
Dhaka, Bangladesh – Following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government, her opponents are celebrating the change in power and the arrival of Nobel Peace Prize winner Mohammad Yunus at the helm. This newfound freedom has prompted several prominent figures from the main opposition, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), to return to Bangladesh after years of exile.
The latest to return is Salahuddin Ahmed, a prominent BNP leader who spent nine years in exile in India. He arrived at Dhaka airport on Sunday afternoon. “Salahuddin Ahmed flew from Delhi at 11:00 am today and arrived at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 2:15 pm,” confirmed Shairul Kabir Khan, a BNP media cell member.
Drama in Shillong
In 2015, Salahuddin vanished for 62 days before being found in Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya state in northeastern India. He was accused of illegal entry and spent time in police custody. The BNP alleged that he was abducted by spies, while a court later acquitted him of these charges.
Alleged Abduction and Corruption
The BNP had previously accused Salahuddin of being kidnapped by spies in 2015. He was also embroiled in a corruption scandal in 2008, when he was sentenced to 7 years in prison for accepting a bribe of 1 crore taka.
