The Israeli military launched attacks on what it described as military targets in Iran on Saturday, in response to Tehran’s launch of ballistic missiles on October 1, officials said. There is currently no information on damage in the Islamic Republic.
The attack, which Israel has been threatening for weeks, comes as the Middle East stands on the brink of regional war, more than a year after Hamas guerrillas attacked Israel. Since then, Israel has launched a devastating ground offensive in the Gaza Strip and an invasion of Lebanon against Tehran-backed fighters.
The Israeli military described Saturday’s attacks as “precise strikes against military targets in Iran,” without providing further details.
“The Iranian regime and its partners in the region have relentlessly attacked Israel since October 7… including direct attacks from Iranian soil,” an Israeli military statement said.
“Like every sovereign country in the world, the State of Israel has the right and duty to respond,” he added.
Explosions were heard in Tehran, the Iranian capital, and state media said some of the sounds came from air defense systems around the city.
A Tehran resident told The Associated Press that at least seven explosions were heard, shaking the surrounding area. The resident spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation.
International flights began being diverted to western Iran as news of the attacks spread, flight tracking data showed. But beyond a brief reference, Iranian state television offered no further details and even began showing what it described as live footage of men loading trucks at a Tehran vegetable market in an attempt to downplay the attack.
Meanwhile, Syria’s state news agency SANA, citing an unnamed military official, reported that “waves of missiles were fired from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan and Lebanese territories against some military sites in the southern and central regions” from Syria Saturday. Syrian air defenses shot down some missiles, he added. There was no information on the victims at the time.
