New York: India abstained from voting at the UN Security Council on Russia’s resolution on the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. At the same time, the resolution, which received only two votes in favor, failed.

Only Russia and China voted in favor of the resolution. Hours before the vote on the draft resolution, Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla arrived in New York.

Earlier, India was widely criticized for abstaining from a vote by the UN Human Rights Council to urgently appoint an independent international commission of inquiry into Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Along with India, 13 countries, including China, Pakistan, Sudan and Venezuela, abstained from voting in the 47 – member panel. Russia and Eritrea voted against, while 32 countries voted in favor, including France, Germany, Japan, Nepal, the UAE, the UK and the US.

India had earlier abstained from two resolutions of the Security Council and one resolution of the General Assembly on the issue.
